    Abstract

Since the discovery of runaway greenhouse by Ingersoll and Rasool in the early 1970s, specialists have used ever more sophisticated models in order to determine the runaway threshold insolation limit and when Earth experiences such a runaway process in the far future. Comparatively little attention was given to the reverse process, namely the conditions leading to a collapse of a massive secondary H2O/CO2 atmosphere into a liquid ocean during the magma ocean cooling phase. Here we present the results from a coupled interior-atmosphere model leading to new insights on the early habitability of Earth and Venus, as well as constraints on the observability of telluric exoplanets at this stage of their evolution.

Prepare to be amazed by our spectacular family science show all about planet Earth. Help the doctor to find out why “Earthy” is poorly and see if together we can help. How to book: there are limited spaces for each show. Tokens for the show are available at the front desk on the day of each show, you must have a token to attend.

If you would like to book in advance please contact education@oum.ox.ac.uk stating which date and time and how many people will be attending.
