An introduction to the science of climate and climate change

This short course provides an introduction to the basics of climate science and modelling and how to go about interpreting the results of climate modelling experiments.

The course comprises nine sections – eight learning units and an assessment. Each learning unit has a distinct theme and takes approximately one to two hours to complete. After an initial introduction the course begins with an overview of the Earth’s climate system and its drivers; it then discusses the variability of climate and presents an overview of climate changes over recent Earth history. The course goes on to introduce global and regional climate modelling and present some of the most up-to-date projections of climate changes over the coming century. The final learning unit presents a brief summary of the main impacts of climate change. The course concludes with a test to assess your learning, and in which a pass is required if you wish to progress to the second course.
