DPhil Researcher

Matthias is interested in the role of the ocean in the climate system. In particular, this includes the ocean response to air-sea heat fluxes and the role of SST patterns in shaping atmospheric extreme events.

I’m interested in the dynamics of the Arctic Ocean. It is a complicated space and one which is sparsely observed and difficult to model. This means we still have a lot to learn.
The Arctic is changing rapidly. Although it is a comparatively small ocean, its oceanic, cryospheric and atmospheric changes are important for climate beyond the Arctic.
My interests are both in the fundamental physics of Arctic ocean and atmosphere circulation, and contributing to improving the representation of these processes in climate models
