Playas, pans and salt lakes

Shaw PA, Thomas DSG

Although small in terms of area covered, pans and playas are an important focus of human activity in arid zones and have received much attention in the literature. Modern hydrological gradients and process sequences may provide valuable analogues for the interpretation of old sedimentary sequences and in palaeoenvironmental reconstruction. Major advances over the past decade have resulted from the investigation of playas as three-dimensional features with a substantial subsurface component. -K.Clayton
