Aeolian sand deposits are estimated to cover 5% of the world's land, and loess (aeolian silt) extends over a further 10%. Sand seas are described, as are aeolian beforms, ripples and dunes. The combination of remote sensing techniques, field measurement and monitoring, theoretical modelling, and laboratory simulation, have led to considerable increases in our understanding in recent years. -K.Clayton
